Post subject:  another newbie to karaoke
Hi,
I'm glad to find this forum today but a lil too late I guess :x
I'm very good when it comes to HT but I don't know much about karaoke yet. Spent a couple hours reading some of the posts here and already learn few things.
My wife now wanted to add a karaoke to my axisting HT system. I already have a 5.1 speaker system set up, yamaha DVD (DVD-A capable) and yamaha receiver. Today I just bought a yamaha KP-300 mixer from eBay (is this a good one???) I still need to buy 1 or 2 mic and all set I guess. After reading the posts here, I'll try to get the Shure SM58.

-My 1st question is will it better if I get an EQ for this system?
-I think karaoke is only 2 channel so, the main speakers will be use but should I set it to large or small?
-Is it right if I run like this: DVD to mixer (to EQ if better) to receiver?

Please help me out.

Use a completely different set of speakers for your karaoke, your HT speakers may not like karaoke that much over long periods of time. Home speakers aren't as forgiving to live vocals since they are designed for a completely different type of signal. Sure they will work, but you could possibly blow them or they just may plain sound like crap.

Yeah, I know about HT speakers don't like karaoke now, but I have no room for another set. Hopefully they don't sound like crap. It's OK if they blow after a year or 2.
Adding an EQ will improve the sound quality?

Just ordered a shure SM58 and PG58 with 2 days shipping, total $170.00 Everythings will be here this Friday and ready for the weekend :)
Please again let me know if adding an EQ will improve the sound quality or not???

Adding an eq will help "color" the sound that may sound better & could possibly add more of the harmful frequencies that can possibly blow your speakers quicker.

Thanks lonman, that's what I thought. Worry about the high freqs from EQ will kill the tweeters.

My last question :lol:

Is there any diff. between XLR to XLR and XLR to 1/4" mic cable??? Does the XLR to XLR better? My mixer has 1/4" jacks :(

I've never HEARD the difference, but the specs will show you otherwise.

I use mics with xlr to 1/4", and have been doing that for six years with no complaints!!

XLR to XLR will have less resistance than the XLR to 1/4" so you won't be turning it up as high to get the same volume. You will also lose the shield ground in the 1/4" leaving it more susceptable to noise interferance.

You guys absolutely right about HT speakers for karaoke. My speakers are just perfect for stereo, digital sources but it really suck for karaoke.

I also started out using my stereo speakers (with the trebbles turned down). I quickly got myself a pair of Carvin 1584's ($450/pair on Ebay) and I am very happy I did. Sounds great, really loud and I don't need to worry about the stereo speakers anymore.

Look at Ebay. Right now someone is selling 1583's. Same as mine except for the 12" woofer.

I went to a local stereo speaker manufacturer that sells Subzero speakers. They use standard Pioneer horns and woofers. The man asked me what I was needing the speakers for, and I told him karaoke. He said Live Mic use would need a more flexible woofer, and for the same price, he installed those in the custom cases he builds.

I got a pair of super sturdy 2 1/2 ft tall speakers, with a tweeter horn and a 12" Pioneer woofer for $270.00! With the $8.00 speaker stand installed.

They're great! I loved them so much I bought a second pair two years later!! For my second system.

Then, years later, I stopped by and got two pair of SMALLER speakers from him... 8" woofers and smaller horns, same construction, sturdy, (yes, with reduced bass) for $130 for the pair. They are only 16" tall, but you wouldn't believe the sound that they command. I use one pair for my home stereo sound, and yes, that means karaoke. And everyone that sees the system marvels at it.

Not saying these would work for anybody else, but even some local kjs that have seen the setup have told me they're jealous, and where's the guy at! LOL!

Can you guys recommend a pair of good speakers just for karaoke? Please note that I already have a superb seperate subwoofer.

Well, if cost is an issue, you can go with the new Peavey PR-10. It's a 10" inch 2 way speaker that should handle the power of your stereo. With the sub (this should be ok for karaoke in the home since vocal frequencies aren't in sub range), these shouldn't sound too bad & you'll be able to eq them a lot more than standard HT speakers without detrimental results.
