The first step is ripping the cdg's to the hard drive. Each file consists of the mp3 and a cdg file which is the graphics. Decide upon a naming format such as Patsy Cline - Crazy
Note ther space-space This is the seperator used by word processors and data bases to seperate the artist title Some still prefer to name with the cd and track number.

Next is devoting a laptop to karaoke purposes and tweaking  it accordingly For XP here is a good link Then depending on your requirements an adequate DAC sound interface with your system.

It is a project but worth it in te long run but these are the basics just to give some hints.   Welcome aboard :)

Get the 'nuts and bolts' part done first and see if you like the sound quality from your laptop.

Use whichever music file player is already installed on your computer then connect it to your sound system....See if you like the sound quality, cause there is no use going forward unless you do.

Once you are happy with the sound from the computer, then you can select from many programs to use to store your karaoke files and play them....You will also need to decide what file format you like best before you start ripping all that music. Some software will only play certain file formats, whereas some will play almost all formats. Some software will only rip/convert the discs into a single format, whereas others will allow you to use several different formats to store your music.

Then you will want to consider how you handle the tasks of actually hosting a show from the computer.....Once again, that is a software issue....Some software can do it all for you in one neat package....Some does quite a bit less and will require you install several different programs....No software is everybodys favorite for different reasons that can only be decided by you and your particular needs.

Once you get to the hosting stage, you are best advised to try all free versions of hosting/playing software before you spend any money on software...The odds are you will find free software that meets your needs nicely.

So, where are you right now in that chain of events?

For playing, for ripping, or for hostng,  For songbooks, or which? There is specific software for each that is mostly free, and there are commercial versions that do it all in one package for up to $200.

Then you might want to try two items I just discovered myself, but haven't yet tried.....Google up karafun 1.1 and karaoke cosmos 1.0.5.

You can try both for free.
